Father's Day Tribute & Campfire Chicken and Strawberry Salad
Keith Wayment, MD (retired) on our last hunt in Idaho for chukars and huns
Happy Father's Day to all out there in Blogger Land. I'm especially grateful to my father who instilled the love of outdoor pursuits in me...bird dogs in particular! My father recently retired from 36 years of general medical practice. He was one of the last dinosaurs of his time! He delivered thousands of babies including my oldest! I'm very proud of my father for his dedication and altruism to his patients and all the public he served! Congrats Dad on a long and wonderful career! Enjoy your retirement!
Campfire Chicken and Strawberry Salad

Ingredients dressing:
2 tablespoons of orange juice
1 tablespoon olive oil or salad oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons sugar
Combine ingredients in a sealed container and shake well. Chill until serving time.
Ingredients marinade:
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 green onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 garlic clove, minced
Combine ingredients in a plastic bag and add chicken (or grouse or quail breasts are yummy too!) after rinsed and dried with paper towels. Chill for a minimum of 2 hours and turn the bag frequently. Grill chicken directly over the coals at medium heat until properly cooked. I like to add the marinade onto the chicken while it cooks. Slice the chicken and add to the salad!
Salad ingredients:
4 cups spinach leaves
1 11-ounce can mandarin oranges, drained
1 cup sliced strawberries
+/- blueberries to taste
Bon appétit
My river is fishable!

Chris Mathan & The Sportsman's Cabinet
I wanted to share a great photo done by my friend (& soon to be Kansas quail hunting partner-in-canine-crime...I won't hold it against her that she hunts with pointers and hasn't seen the true "setter- light" yet) Chris Mathan co-founded Strideaway.com and owns and operates a design and marking firm specializing in the shooting sports industry out of Gorham, ME called The Sportsman's Cabinet.
Chris' portfolio includes some pretty impressive work like Dogs Unlimited, Northwoods Bird Dogs, and Davis Quail Hunts...just to mention a few!
I really enjoy Chris' photography of bird dogs chasing wild birds and of the grouse & horse back trials. Chris' photos demonstrate field-realism and bird dogs doing what they do best! Recently, her photographs were featured by the Ruffed Grouse Society!
Great work Chris!

Day Dreaming
I came across these drawings while looking at AYA's website. I guess it doesn't hurt to window shop and daydream! I got my AYA a couple years ago, and I'm still in love with my sweet Spanish gal! Here's a link to AYA's website...day dream away!
Grouse season will be upon us in 77 short days and a wake up!
Enjoy the Summer & live life to its fullest!

Waiting on Crow
My river is blown. I guess that's expected when my lonely gal is a freestoner...no man's arms to hold her.

So for now, I'm doing all the Spring cleaning and organizing and most importantly day dreaming.

Inspecting the gear to make sure it's ready for Autumn and the stories and groused adventures She'll bring. Making sure the smooth bores are lightly oiled and caressing their metallic curves.
Inspecting the dog boots for wear from cholla-choked Colorado scaled quail country.
Becoming reacquainted with some ol' sports who lived the Upland Shooting Life and wrote about it...the greats...Spiller, Volk, Waterman, Phillips, Evans, Ford, Gaddis, Gram-pa Grouse, Buckingham, Tapply, Holland, Jones, Sheldon, Knight, Hill, and Mulak.

Tying a few elk-haired flies to entice greenbacks in my favorite Sangre de Cristo Mountain stream. Training and conditioning the bird dogs and myself.

Poring through maps of the Comanche and Cimarron National Grasslands and the uplands of Idaho.
But...most importantly...I'm waiting on the murder of crows that keep soiling my deck and hazing the blue birds in their nest.
And...I'm waiting on my Damned Elhew pointer that's ran off for the umteenth time! If you should cross paths with her, she really doesn't need the meds as stated on her collar!

Please check out my recent article on Strideaway (Click Here) about Canine Conditioning and Heat Exhaustion!
